Social media marketing is about building relationships. And you can create these relationships by giving what your audience wants.

By doing a little market research, you can know exactly what your Twitter followers want you to tweet.

The Social Profit Formula uses a very powerful tool called favstar.fm, which is a website that lists the most liked posts on Twitter.

How the Twitter favorite star works

When you read any tweet, you will see a star on the right-hand side of the text which you can click if you want to “favorite” the tweet. “Favoriting” a tweet is similar to “liking” a Facebook post. “Favoriting” and “liking” are the most common ways for users to rate or vote for social media content.

Although the favorite star is not as popular as the like thumbs-up icon, there are enough people who use it so you are able to gather some data and see what people actually like.

How favstar.fm works

Every time a Twitter user clicks on the favorite star, that particular tweet gets listed on Favstar.

Go to the favstar.fm website and click on the leader board. The results page will display a list of the top tweets that have been “faved” by Twitter users. From this data you can already get an idea on the hottest things that the general Twitter audience is interested in.

Of course you will want to narrow that down to tweets that are relevant to your niche. You can do that by typing in your user name and the user names of your followers, into the search box. The results will show your own tweets that are the most favorite of people. You will also see the favorite tweets of the audiences of the people who have faved you. This gives you lots of ideas on what people want you to tweet.

One cool feature of favstar.fm is that you can retweet any favorite tweet from the list itself. If you run out of ideas or don’t have anything to do on a certain day, one option you have is to go to favstar.fm and start retweeting some of these faved tweets.

You could also go to your own profile and click the Faved By button to see all the different people who have faved you and how many times they faved you. This tells you which users are really paying attention to you and you can start learning more about them.

One of the best strategies you can use is to find the leading authorities in your particular marketplace. Look at their posts to get an idea what to tweet or blog about to your target audience. You can reconstruct what they are doing so you can attract the same audience that you are looking to reach.
