Twitter Principles for Social Media Marketing

by Social Profit Formula Bonus

Module 2 of the Social Profit Formula focuses on Twitter, and how marketers can successfully use this micro-blogging platform to boost their social media marketing efforts.

It is important to understand a few basic principles when using Twitter for your online business.

Principle #1: Your number of followers means nothing

People are obsessed with getting as many Twitter followers as possible. But in business tweeting, the number of followers that you have means nothing. The only thing that matters is the quality of those followers. A thousand followers who do everything that you say is definitely better than having a million followers that do nothing for your business. You must also realize that the more followers you have, the harder it is to convince them to respond to you.

Of course, you will need a basic number of followers for the purpose of social proof. If visitors come on and see that you only have 10 followers, they are less likely to follow you.

Aim for 2,000 to 3,000 followers as your foundation. If you don’t get more, don’t berate yourself and don’t feel that someone else is better than you because they have more followers.

Principle #2: Twitter can be a huge waste of time

Tweeting can be time consuming so use it strategically. Do not waste time commenting on the health of people, sports, or politics, unless that is your niche. You don’t need to tell people what you had for lunch or that you’re off to the gym.

The object of using Twitter for business is to communicate information that is of interest to your target audience.

Principle #3: You don’t have to read anything

Reading each and every post on Twitter can be a huge waste of time. You don’t have to read what your followers post. You don’t even have to read your DMs or retweets.

What you want to do is focus your time and effort on posting content that other people want to post. Remember, you are using Twitter to make a living, not to engage in deeply personal conversations with a bunch of people around you.

Principle #4: Build influence

Because your first objective is to build influence, you want to get as many people in your target audience to follow you as possible. Module 2 of the Social Profit Formula will teach you which followers you should follow too.

Principle #5: Train people to do what you want them to do

Your second objective in using Twitter for your business is to train people to do what you want them to do. You want people to read your posts, click your links, and keep following you.

Principle #6: Do not treat your business Twitter like personal twittering

Do not post comments that are irrelevant to your target audience. Do not tell people whether you are tired, about your political views, and other stuff like that. Your objective should be to consistently deliver solutions to problems and issues of your target audience and nothing else.

Principle #7: People are going to spam you

It is a fact that people spam on Twitter. But that doesn’t matter if you’re not wasting your time reading their posts anyway. It could cost you a lot more time to screen people who want to follow you than to just not read their posts once they are on board.

Principle #8: Minimize work wherever possible

The Social Profit Formula is going to show you how to minimize your work and use Twitter judiciously so that it will work for your social media marketing plan.
