When using social media to build influence, it is always good to have a following strategy especially if you are using Twitter for social media marketing.
Do not simply follow people you know. You want to attract a specific target audience, not necessarily anyone you know or like.
Social Profit Formula talks about two different following practices: the rock star and follow everyone.
The Rock Star strategy
The Rock Star is a person who everyone wants to follow but only follows a few people back. This is common with celebrities and people who are authorities in their fields. These Twitter users usually have hundreds of thousands to millions of followers but only follow around a hundred people.
This strategy can be tough if you are not a popular guy. It will also limit your influence because there are lots of people who simply won’t follow you if they feel you won’t follow them back.
The Follow Everyone strategy
The best strategy in building your Twitter influence is to follow everyone. It is a lot less work and it promotes reciprocity.
Social media marketing through reciprocity
The concept of reciprocity is basically that I do something for you so you’ll feel that you need to do something for me in return.
You don’t want to be in a situation where they feel like you owe them. You always want to be in the place where they will feel like they owe you.
By following everyone and promoting reciprocity, you can quickly build followers even if you are not a rock star. Social Profit Formula will even teach you how to set up automated systems so you can follow back everyone who follows you.
The downside to the “follow everyone” strategy is that you will get a lot of spam. Do not worry too much about spammers following you. You won’t be reading all of their posts anyway. It will only be a waste of time going through each and every tweet before deciding whether this person is someone that you want to follow back.
Follow back if they follow you. If you see stuff that you don’t like such as porn or rubbish content, simply unfollow them and they’ll go away.
